How She Came To Be
I stood at the grave of my grandfather alone as tears slowly made trails down my cheek. I had been struggling with my depression on and off for years but it was always worst at this time of year for it was when I lost my best friend, my grandfather. Finally one of my tear drops dripped off my chin and landed on ground. The ground began to grow soft and muddy and I could hear what sounded like a digging sound. I jumped back scared and unsure of what to expect. After a few moments a dogs head appeared. I gave a small hiccup laugh which soon brook out in giggles as the dog clambered the rest of the way out. She tottled over to me and looked up at me. She had the saddest eyes I had ever seen it was like she knew what I was feeling. With a sniff I bent and hugged the medium sized dog and began to cry in earnest. There was something about her that just let me let everything out for one. I cried for about ten minutes straight before I was finally able to stop. With a couple last hiccups I whipped my face on my sleeve and kissed the dogs head. "You need a name," I whispered softly. Again I looked at her eyes and a name came to me."I'll call you Deirdre it means Sad One." Deirdre seemed to like the name for the sadness in her eyes brightened if just for a moment.
